Miriad makes first acquisition, in its quest for growth

Staffordshire-based camping and leisure products specialists Miriad Products Ltd have progressed their ambitious growth plans by purchasing Quest Leisure Products Limited. A deal sealed this week brings the two companies symbiotically together.

Miriad and Quest have much in common:  both Midlands-based; both suppliers to the UK’s outdoor leisure industry; and both of a similar age, with a family feel and customer-focussed culture.

Quest, based in Redditch, have been in business for over 30 years.  Chris and Maggie Irving started Quest from a very small warehouse with a vision of being a dedicated sole supplier of many exclusive products and with the help of their dedicated staff have grown the business into a multimillion-pound business.   Chris commented, ‘’We are delighted to hand over our business to Miriad.  With our three co-directors, Adam, Louise and Kevin staying with the company, we know that the future is secure for our customers and staff alike “.

The Quest team has built a class-leading attitude to supplying and supporting the caravan, camping, garden centre, leisure and outdoor pursuits trade sectors. Adam Hughes, one of the Quest’s Directors for 10 years, comments, “These are exciting times to be in the staycation market and we’re delighted that Miriad have acquired our business. We have very complimentary product ranges and feel sure that our and Miriad’s customers will find much of interest in our combined offering.  It’s reassuring to know that the name, premises and staff, will be kept intact.”

Miriad CEO, Penny Whitelock is also feeling very positive about the acquisition, “It’s great to add Quest to our portfolio, as we share many values, such as our customer-focus and partner-based approach to our retailers. The move will see new, national distribution opportunities for both companies, and much potential for future growth both in terms of sales, and importantly, for staff development too. We look forward to the continuation of providing excellent service to our entire retail network.”

Miriad moved to their Uttoxeter-base earlier this year, significantly increasing the warehouse capabilities of their former, Derbyshire home. Highly motivated, and with this recent acquisition, they are firmly on course to achieve their 25 % growth ambition, by 2024. Since moving to Staffordshire Miriad have recruited 7 new heads across all aspects of the business and engaged with multiple local traders to support them with the move. The mission at Miriad is: ’To supply leading, ever-changing leisure stock to retailers, manufacturers and OEMS, available 24/7.’ The addition of Quest to the group portfolio is an enabler to meet these expectations.

Important changes for customers in Northern Ireland, Ireland and the Channel Islands

New minimum order values apply to your region

All our customers are extremely important to us and delivering excellent customer service is our priority. Unfortunately, we have been experiencing high levels of complications relating to shipments to our much-valued overseas customers.

Committed to you
It’s regrettable that customs complexities and carrier disruptions have caused increased processing, high levels of administration and considerable disruption to our delivery provision to you. Shipment costs continue to rise for over-water deliveries, compounded by post-Brexit complications. In a commitment to continue to supply you, we have to make changes to our terms, minimum order values and regularity of shipment.

Minimum order values
As a regrettable outcome, we must with immediate effect increase minimum order values to:
£500 for shipments to Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, and
£1000 for shipments to Ireland, as part of the EU.

We are confident that by imposing these minimum order values and grouping deliveries together in one ex-works shipment to Ireland and Northern Ireland, per week, we will be able to continue trade through this period of disruption. These changes come into effect immediately and we are unable to accept back orders.

Suspension of portal facilities
Unfortunately, due to the introduction of minimum order values and complexities arising from being unable to ship unusually sized products such as awnings and carpets, all orders from your territory will need to be placed by telephone or email.

We are so sorry that we have been forced to take this action to reshape our order processes and terms for Ireland and Northern Ireland. We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.

Staffordshire-based Caravan, Campervan and Motorhome leisure equipment specialists further strengthen the senior management team, with the appointment of Dawn Caine, as Financial Controller. With over a decade’s experience in the rental power industry, as Financial Accountant at Energyst in Cannock, Dawn steps up to the Miriad role to oversee all company accounts and lead the finance team.

Dawn joins recently appointed Finance Director, Vicki Edgerton as the company enters a new 3-year growth phase, with an ambitious plan in place to achieve 25% growth, by 2023. In January, Miriad made the move to larger premises in Uttoxeter, to support this expansion and deliver greater efficiencies. With a keen eye on customers and innovation, their future investments are not limited, to new premises and machinery, but also include the expansion of the team, and continuing investment in their people. Keeping pace with the upward trend for UK staycations, they are currently actively recruiting for the warehouse leadership team, in anticipation of increased demand.

CEO Penny Whitelock comments, “Dawn is a great addition to the senior management team. She shares our ambition to centre future growth around people and their progression. Highly motivated, keen to learn, open-minded and enthusiastic, we are sure that she will embrace this new opportunity and help put Miriad on the road to realising our ambitious growth plans.”

Having joined the team in March, Dawn has already united the team and created a series of new processes to support the finance element of the future plan. Dawn adds, “This is an industry close to my heart, as keen caravaner and all-round outdoors person I’m committed to support the wider business and develop a first-class finance team. I embrace new challenges and I’m looking forward to making the most of this opportunity and energising the team.”

Miriad Products Ltd, is set to evolve further with the appointment of Penny Whitelock as CEO.

Back in 1999, following an MBO by Mike Ham, Richard Toon and later Brian Croshaw, Miriad was formed. Now the business has come of age, Penny is taking the wheel on the next stage of its journey.

Penny joined the business as Managing Director in November 2019, with more than two decades experience at senior leadership level including nine years as MD at Auto Trader. Prior to her appointment as Miriad’s MD, she supported the business in a coaching and mentoring capacity with a keen focus on people and their progression. Under her guidance, the business has grown and adapted in challenging conditions and she has steered the move to new premises in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, which are three times larger than their former Derbyshire home.

Penny comments, “With a keen eye on our customers and innovation, we are ambitious to see the business grow organically by 25% in the next three years.  Acquisition plans are also being considered to broaden our product and customer bases.  We are investing in our future, not only in new premises and machinery, but in our people. They have been highly motivated, keen to learn, open minded and together we will continue to enthusiastically drive Miriad forward to embrace new opportunities and progress and grow the legacy of the original owners.”

Exiting Miriad CEO, Mike Ham, will continue his interests in Miriad as shareholder and at group board level.  His operational responsibilities will fully transfer to a sister group company, Doublecool, which is seeing significant growth also.  Mike is CEO of that business and he will focus fully on locking in the considerable opportunities that he has created in 2020.   Before embarking on new ventures outside of the industry, Richard Toon and Brian Croshaw will remain at Miriad during H1 2021 and will complete the succession plans for their roles which began in February 2019.

The remaining team wishes them all the best in their next ventures.

We are trading safely but we apologise as there may be some minor delays

We can confirm that we are open and able to continue to trade following COVID restrictions but there may be some minor delays in processing your order due to several factors.

As of 26 January 2021 date we will be relocating to new office, distribution and warehouse space at Uttoxeter. The new premises will be three times the size – at 52,000 sq ft – of our current location meaning that we can expand product ranges and improve warehousing and distribution management.

As you can imagine Team Miriad are terribly busy packing up current stock and moving over 8000 product lines to our new warehouse, along with organising our new warehouse space to be efficient as possible going forward, all whilst following COVID guidelines. So, we ask that whilst we are open and able to trade safely during lockdown 3, please bear with us if there are any delays in dealing with your enquiries, stock quantity confirmation and or deliveries over the next few weeks.

We value your custom, and your continued support is particularly important to us and we are doing all we can to minimise any disruptions. Should you experience a delay or a problem at this time please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you.
